Shell smooth, globular or oval, with a low spire and an enlarged last whorl; aperture semicircular, umbilicus prominent. Foot enlarged; propodial and opercular regions partially cover shell in creeping animals; operculum large, oligogyrous, horny in North Sea species. Animal ploughs through soft substrata in search of bivalve preys, whose shells it bores. Spawn is a characteristic collar or necklace-shaped ribbon, stiffened with sand; commonly known as necklace-shells.
