Familia Anomiidae

Rafinesque, 1815

Shell thin and brittle, approximately circular in outline, often irregular; attached by a byssus passing through a hole in right valve, with the left valve uppermost. Inequilateral, umbones rounded, indistinct. Inequivalve; left valve convex, right valve flat or concave. Right valve with a single adductor muscle scar; left valve with a single adductor scar, adjacent to, or fused with, one or two byssal attachment scars. No hinge teeth. Ligament internal, in a deep pit below umbone of right valve. Inner surface of shell nacreous, glossy, no pallial line.
