Small to medium sized animals, rather elongated with a relatively broad girdle which encroaches to a greater or lesser extent between the valves. Valve sculpturing is coarse, consisting of raised papillae of round to pear-drop shape, often arranged in radiating rows. The head valve has five notches in its insertion plate; valves 2-8 each have a single pair of notches. The girdle varies from nude to densely spiny, but invariably there is a series (typically 18) of tufts of bristles around the head valve and situated at the sutures of each valve.
