Shell thick, strong, oval or subtriangular; equivalve, inequilateral, umbones just anterior to midline. Sculpture usually prominent, typically concentric lines or ridges; periostracum thick. Two cardinal teeth in the right valve, two or three in the left valve. True lateral teeth absent. Ligament external. Adductor muscle scars about equal; pallial line distinct, without a pallial sinus.
