Relatively small, oval chitons, typically reddish in colour although somewhat variable. Valves appear almost smooth with only very slightly raised dorsal papillae, resulting in the lateral areas being only very indistinctly defined. The head valve and tail valve bear insertion plates with numerous notches each, the intermediate valves typically have three pairs of notches. The sutural laminae on valves 2-8 are prominent and continuous across the jugal area. The girdle is covered in densely packed, definitely arranged, needle-like spicules and has a fringe of short spines.
