Shell thick, rugose; inequivalve, left (lower) valve convex, often forming a deep bowl and frequently overlapping the right valve, usually cemented to the substratum when small, right valve flat or slightly concave. Inequilateral, umbones anterior to midline. juveniles with small taxodont teeth on each side of the umbones, absent in adults. Ligament internal, thick; inner surface nacreous, with a single adductor scar, elliptical, distinct, and often recessed.
