Familia Ommastrephidae

Steenstrup, 1857

Body cylindrical, with a rhombic terminal fin on posterior third of mantle. Anterior dorsal edge of mantle straight, not produced as a lobe. Funnel in a deep pit. Arms stout, twice the length of the head, each with two rows of suckers. Tentacle club with four rows of suckers, those of the central rows larger than the marginal series.
