Gray J.E., 1847
Relatively small, oval animals which reach a maximum size of 50 mm. Valves are sculptured with raised dorsal papillae, the lateral triangles are often clearly defined by being slightly raised. The head valve is disproportionately large and undifferentiated, the tail valve bears a well developed mucro. All valves have insertion plates, those on the head and tail valves have numerous notches, those on the intermediate valves typically have a single pair of notches. The girdle is densely covered with relatively large, evenly distributed scales.
