Shell absent. Body elongated, with dorso-lateral ceratal processes containing tributaries of the digestive gland; cerata without cnidosacs and without terminal pores. Oral tentacles are lacking, but the head bears rhinophoral prominences or tentacles which may be flattened and ear-like (Alderia) , inrolled (Hermaea), grooved, or digitiform (Stiliger) , rarely absent.
The anal opening is median (antero-dorsal or postero-dorsal). The radula teeth usually lack fine denticulations. The penis is often armed with a spine.
